Persimmon is a rather rustic and homely plant, trees are relatively free from serious insect or disease problems. However, there are several insect pests that may be a problem in some areas. In order to obtain a perfect fruit, competitive during high season market demands, some care must be observed. The most common pests affecting persimmon are:

- Fruit Fly (Anastrepha fraterculus e Ceratitis capitata): will damage the pulp.

- Fruit Moths (Hypocala andremona): will feed on the flower calyx and in the fruit.

- Cochineal (Pseudococce comstachi): will attack on branches and fruit causing depreciation in market value.

- Limeira Beatle (Sternocalaspis quatuordecimcostata): will deform the leaves.

- Lepidobroca "trunk borer" (Hocptageria sp): will tunnel into the trunk of young trees near the soil line. If detected early this insect can be removed with a sharp knife before extensive damage is caused to the tree.

- Mite (Eriophyes diospyrl): causes premature drop of green fruit. It may be useful to try girdling a few branches.

- Thrips (Hetiothrips haemorshoidalis): reportedly attack fruit in the southern parts of Florida, Fuyu variety is especially susceptible.

Special care during winter (while plants are dormant) is advisable. The use of Bordeaux mixture: a fungicide made of copper sulphate, lime and water, is recommeded.
